The best HyperSwitch alternative for Mac: keep Option-Tab, get a switcher that's maintained

HyperSwitch was many Mac users' first real window switcher. It was free, it showed a preview of each window, and it put that switcher on ⌥⇥ so the built-in ⌘Tab stayed where it was. If you're looking for a HyperSwitch alternative now, it's usually because the app is still labelled a beta and updates arrive years apart. Here's where HyperSwitch stands, what it actually did for you, and which maintained switcher keeps the most of that habit.

Why people look for a HyperSwitch alternative

It has always been a beta. The developer's own page still offers it as a beta download. It also says that some preferences don't work, that previews sometimes take a few seconds to appear, and that there's no option to show minimized windows yet.

Updates are rare. The latest version, 0.3.10, came out in early 2024. Its changelog lists Apple Silicon support and fixes for macOS 14 Sonoma, and the release before it was years earlier. Nothing has followed for macOS 15, 26 Tahoe or this year's macOS 27. Users on AlternativeTo have also reported older beta builds announcing that they'd expired, even though no newer version was offered.

None of that means it'll stop working tomorrow. Window switchers rely on the Accessibility APIs, and those change slowly. But a beta that gets a fix every few years is a risky thing to rely on fifty times a day. Pick its replacement before a macOS update picks for you.

What HyperSwitch actually did

HyperSwitch's defaults are worth remembering, because they're what your fingers already know:

  • ⌥⇥ showed every window, not every app, with a thumbnail of each.
  • ⌥` showed only the current app's windows.
  • ⌘Tab was left alone. The system app switcher stayed on its own keys, so you had both.

That ⌥⇥ / ⌥` pairing is the habit to protect. A replacement that moves it to different keys means weeks of pressing the wrong ones.

Let's Switch: the same two shortcuts, kept current

Let's Switch is the closest match if HyperSwitch was ⌥⇥ and ⌥` for you, because those are its defaults too. There's nothing to remap.

The switcher itself is free, permanently. Hold ⌥ and tap ⇥, and you get every open window across your apps and monitors, each with a live preview. The order is most recent first, so the window you just left is always one tap away. A quick ⌥⇥ flips you straight back to it. Keep tapping ⇥ to go further back, ⇧⇥ to step the other way, and release ⌥ to jump. ⌥` cycles the windows of the app you're in, which is the other half of the HyperSwitch habit.

Pro is $9.99, paid once, and it adds what HyperSwitch never had: a search box. Press ⌥Space, type a few letters of a window title or app name, and ↵ takes you there. Press ⌥Space again and the same box launches any installed app. There's no account and no subscription. One key covers up to 20 devices, and the app sends no telemetry. It lives in the menu bar, with no Dock icon.

To be fair about the trade: Let's Switch is much newer than HyperSwitch, it needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later, and it's not open source. It also only switches between windows on your current Space. If you want minimized windows and other desktops in the same list, AltTab, below, is the better fit.

The other options, honestly

AltTab is the free, open-source answer, and the most popular one. It also defaults to ⌥⇥, so that half of your habit carries over. Its list can include minimized and hidden windows, and windows on other Spaces with a badge showing where they are. That's more than HyperSwitch ever showed. It has a long settings panel, and type-to-search is part of its optional paid Pro. We compare it in detail in our AltTab alternative post, and against the Dock-hover approach in DockDoor vs AltTab.

Witch is the configure-everything option from Many Tricks, at $14. It runs on much older macOS versions than Let's Switch, it can switch browser tabs as well as windows, and its list filters as you type. It's the one to pick if you want to fine-tune every detail and don't mind a long preferences window.

DockDoor is free and open source, and it puts window previews on Dock hover as well as offering its own switcher. It suits you if you liked HyperSwitch's thumbnails but reach for the mouse as often as the keyboard.

Moving off HyperSwitch in ten minutes

  1. Quit HyperSwitch first, and remove it from your login items. Two switchers on ⌥⇥ will fight over the keys, and the result looks like neither works. More in Mac shortcut conflicts.
  2. Grant Accessibility to the new app. Every window switcher needs it to see and raise windows. Let's Switch also asks for Screen Recording, but only to draw the previews. Skip it and you get names and icons instead.
  3. Revoke HyperSwitch's permissions. Once you've uninstalled it, remove its entries from Privacy & Security → Accessibility (and Screen Recording, if it's there). An old app shouldn't keep access it no longer needs.
  4. Give the new order three days. In a most-recent-first list, the window you want is almost always in the first two or three. It takes a few days for your fingers to trust that, so judge it on day three, not in the first ten minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is HyperSwitch still being developed? It's still offered as a beta, and the latest release, 0.3.10, is from early 2024. There's no public roadmap, so it's safest to assume updates will stay rare.

Is HyperSwitch the same as Hyperswitch the payments platform? No. Search results mix them up. The Mac window switcher is from bahoom.com. Hyperswitch, the open-source payments router, is an unrelated developer project.

Is there a free HyperSwitch alternative? Yes. AltTab and DockDoor are free and open source, and the Let's Switch switcher (⌥⇥ with live previews, plus ⌥` for one app's windows) is free permanently. Only the search palette is paid.

Which alternative keeps HyperSwitch's shortcuts? Let's Switch uses ⌥⇥ for all windows and ⌥` for the current app's windows out of the box, the same as HyperSwitch. AltTab also uses ⌥⇥ by default.
