Mac external monitor scaling: why the text looks soft, and which resolutions fix it

You plug a perfectly good monitor into a Mac and the text looks worse than it did on the laptop screen you just closed. Not broken — soft, slightly thin. The same panel looked fine on a Windows machine, and nothing in System Settings fixes it.

It isn't your cable. It's how Mac external monitor scaling works: macOS renders its interface at one of two sizes, and a display either lands on one of them or it doesn't. Here's the rule, which panels land on it, and what to do if yours doesn't.

How Mac external monitor scaling actually works

macOS draws its entire interface at either or . There is no genuine 150% or 125% mode the way Windows has — the Mac's answer to a dense screen is to render everything at double size and then let the panel's pixel density make it small again.

That gives you three possible outcomes on an external display:

  1. Exact 2× match. macOS renders a frame with exactly as many pixels as the panel has, so every rendered pixel becomes one real pixel. As sharp as a Mac gets.
  2. Scaled 2×. You pick a "looks like" size that isn't half the panel's pixel count, so macOS renders a larger frame and shrinks it to fit. Far better than 1×, but edges soften and the GPU pushes more pixels than it displays.
  3. 1× (non-Retina). The panel isn't dense enough for a usable 2× mode, so macOS draws everything at single size. This is the one that actually looks bad.

Apple builds its own screens around roughly 218 pixels per inch — the 27-inch Studio Display, the 24-inch iMac — with MacBook Pro panels denser still at about 254 PPI. A display only feels "Mac-native" when its density puts it near the same place.

Which panels land on an exact 2×

Halve a panel's pixel count. If the result is a workspace size you'd actually want at that screen size, it's an exact match.

Two conclusions fall out of that, and they're what most buying advice gets wrong.

27-inch 4K is the awkward size. Its honest 2× mode gives you 1080p of working space on a 27-inch screen, which almost nobody wants. Choose "looks like 2560 × 1440" instead and macOS renders a 5120 × 2880 frame and scales it down to 3840 × 2160. Text stays good — it just isn't the pixel-perfect result a 5K panel gives, and you pay in GPU load, which can cost you refresh-rate or HDR options.

1440p is not a scaling problem — it's a rendering one. At 109 PPI there's no 2× mode worth using, so macOS renders at 1×. On top of that, Apple removed subpixel antialiasing in macOS Mojave in 2018, on the reasoning that Retina was the future. That's the missing half of the explanation: the same 1440p monitor really does render text better on Windows, because Windows still uses the trick macOS dropped. The Terminal commands that circulated back then don't reliably work on current macOS, so don't buy a panel expecting to fix it later.

If you're choosing a display

Three shapes are worth considering:

  • 27-inch 5K — the no-compromise answer. Apple's Studio Display (2026) starts at $1,599; the ASUS ProArt Display 5K PA27JCV lists around $799 and the BenQ MA270S around $999, same 5120 × 2880 panel resolution. Check current prices — this category has moved a lot in the past year.
  • 24-inch 4K — the cheap exact match. Pixel-perfect, but 1920 × 1080 of workspace is tight for side-by-side work.
  • 27-inch 4K — the pragmatic compromise. Slightly soft at the resolution you'll actually run, much cheaper, fine for most people.

Skip 1440p and 1440p ultrawides if text quality matters on a Mac. They're excellent gaming panels and a downgrade as a Mac desktop.

Where to check and change it

System Settings → Displays, with the external monitor selected. The five "looks like" previews are the safe choices. To see what the panel really is, open Advanced, turn on Show resolutions as a list, then Show all resolutions — treat that longer list as a diagnostic, not a menu, since most of it looks worse. If a mode you expect is missing entirely, that's usually the cable or dock limiting bandwidth rather than macOS: a display on a basic USB-C hub often can't do full resolution and a high refresh rate at once.

More pixels only help if you can reach them

Here's the part the monitor reviews skip. The reason to want a 5K panel isn't sharpness for its own sake — it's that 2560 × 1440 of workspace holds three real windows side by side instead of two. That only pays off if arranging and reaching them is instant, and dragging window edges with a mouse is the slow step.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my external monitor look blurry compared to my MacBook? Almost always pixel density. Your MacBook screen is around 220–250 PPI and runs at an exact 2×; a typical 1440p external is 109 PPI and runs at 1×, with no subpixel antialiasing to soften the blow.

Is 4K or 5K better for a Mac? At 27 inches, 5K — it's the only one that gives you 2560 × 1440 of workspace at an exact 2×. At 24 inches, 4K already is the exact match, so 5K buys you nothing there.

Does changing the "looks like" resolution hurt performance? Scaled modes make the GPU render more pixels than it displays. On a modern Mac you won't notice it in normal use, but it can limit the refresh rates or HDR modes offered for that display.

Will a better cable fix soft text? No. A bad cable causes dropped resolutions, flicker or a capped refresh rate — not soft rendering. If the resolution is right and text still looks soft, it's scaling, not signal.

Can I turn subpixel antialiasing back on? Not dependably. It was removed in macOS Mojave, and the defaults commands from that era no longer restore it on current versions. The font-smoothing setting that remains only changes stroke weight.
