Mac windows resize when connecting an external monitor: why it happens and what fixes it

You dock the laptop, the second display lights up, and your desktop is wrong: half the windows on the wrong screen, the rest a different size than you left them. Unplug at the end of the day and it happens in reverse. If your Mac windows resize when connecting an external monitor — or scatter when you disconnect one — there is no hidden checkbox that turns it off. Here is what macOS is doing, which settings are worth changing, and how to stop caring about it.

Why Mac windows resize when connecting an external monitor

Two separate behaviours get blamed for the same mess.

A window that changes display gets rescaled. Since macOS Monterey, moving a window between displays resizes it proportionally: a window filling two thirds of a 14-inch laptop panel becomes two thirds of a 27-inch monitor. That is deliberate, and usually what you want when you drag something across. It is not what you want when macOS does it to twenty windows at once.

A display that disappears evacuates its windows. When a screen goes away — unplugged, asleep, or switched to another input — the windows that lived on it have nowhere to be. macOS moves them to a display that still exists, usually the built-in one, and shrinks anything that no longer fits. Their old positions are not written down anywhere: they were live state, not a saved layout, and live state does not survive the screen it described. That is the whole reason nothing snaps back when you plug in again. macOS is not refusing to restore your layout; it never had one to restore.

It is not tiling, and turning tiling off won't help

The first thing most people try is switching off Tiling & snapping in System Settings → Desktop & Dock. Wrong lever: those settings control what happens when you drag a window to an edge or the menu bar, and display reflow happens with every one of them disabled. If you want them off for their own sake, here's the full list — just don't expect it to change what docking does.

The settings that are actually worth checking

None of these make macOS put windows back. They remove the failure modes that stack on top of the reflow and make it look worse than it is.

  1. Displays have separate Spaces — System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Mission Control. On, each display keeps its own Spaces; off, one Space stretches across both and a window can straddle the gap (changing it needs a log out and back in). Neither setting stops the evacuation, but it changes how windows are grouped when a display leaves, and one of the two will annoy you less.
  2. Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use — same pane, turn it off. When Spaces reorder themselves, windows end up somewhere you didn't put them, which is a second problem people mistake for the first.
  3. Display arrangement — System Settings → Displays → Arrange. Drag the blue rectangles to match where the screens physically are, and check the main display (the one with the menu bar) is the one you want. A mismatch here is why "move left" sends a window right.
  4. Scaled resolution. This is the specific fix for windows that come back smaller after the monitor sleeps or after clamshell wake. Users have reported for years, across several macOS versions, that the shrink only happens on displays running a scaled resolution and stops on the display's native one (System Settings → Displays, pick the resolution marked as the default). The trade-off is real — native resolution on a 4K panel means smaller text — so try it long enough to confirm the shrinking stops.

There is no supported way to turn off the proportional resize itself — no toggle, no defaults key that survives an OS update. Anyone promising one is describing the tiling settings above.

The habit that makes docking a non-event

The other approach is to stop treating your layout as something precious to preserve, and make rebuilding it cheap. Frequently asked questions

Can I stop macOS resizing windows when I move them to another display? No. The proportional resize has no user-facing setting, and it applies whether you drag the window yourself or macOS moves it for you.

Do my windows go back when I reconnect the monitor? No. macOS does not store the positions windows had on a disconnected display, so there is nothing to put back. Anything that restores them is third-party software keeping its own record.

Why do windows come back smaller after the display sleeps? Almost always a scaled resolution. The display drops to a lower mode as it sleeps or wakes, windows size themselves for that brief smaller screen, and stay there. Native resolution is the workaround people report success with.

Does clamshell mode make it worse? It makes it more visible. With the lid shut there is only one display, so everything ends up on it — and when the external display wakes at a different speed than the Mac, you get a second round of reflow on top of the first.
