Mission Control not working on macOS 27? What's broken, and what actually helps
If Mission Control is not working properly on macOS 27, you're not imagining it. Since Golden Gate shipped on 14 September, the loudest complaint on Apple's forums, MacRumors and Reddit has been the same: switching Spaces freezes for about a second and then teleports, the zoom animation is gone, full-screen apps flash black, and desktops dragged between monitors leave a dead black screen behind. Some of that is an Apple bug you can't fix from System Settings. Some of it is a setting, a shortcut or a third-party tool you can fix in five minutes. This guide separates the two.
Is Mission Control broken on macOS 27, or is it just me?
It's a real regression, and it isn't universal. The most-cited Apple Community thread describes "~1 second freeze → instant switch → no transition animation" on an M5 MacBook Pro running 27.0, and replies confirm it on M5 and M4 MacBook Pros and Airs and on an M1 Pro driving an external monitor. Other people on similar hardware report Mission Control working normally, so don't assume every symptom you have is the bug.
The people in that thread already tried the usual rituals — restart, restart the Dock, Reduce Motion, Safe Mode, a fresh user account, removing desktop widgets — and none of them removed the freeze. That's the useful signal: if you only have the one-second pause and missing animation, it's Apple's to fix. Apple released macOS 27.0.1 on 28 September with "bug fixes" and no detail; install it, test, and don't assume it has fixed this until you've seen it yourself.
Match the symptom to the fix
| What you see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| ~1 s freeze, then an instant jump between Spaces | macOS 27 regression | Update to 27.0.1; nothing in Settings removes it yet |
| Black screen after dragging a desktop to another monitor | Spaces bug on multi-display setups | Add a new desktop on the black screen, switch to it, delete it |
| Mouse button for Mission Control / Spaces does nothing | Third-party mouse tool broken by macOS 27 | Update the tool (see below) |
| Keyboard shortcut does nothing | Shortcut unticked or grabbed by another app | Re-check Keyboard Shortcuts → Mission Control |
| Desktops reorder themselves | Auto-rearrange is on | Turn off "Automatically rearrange Spaces…" |
| App Exposé doesn't show minimized windows | Minimized windows sit apart from the rest | ⌘-Tab to the app, hold ⌥ before releasing |
| Full-screen app stuck on the wrong display | Full-screen apps own their Space | Exit full screen, move the window, re-enter |
The fixes that do work
1. Restart the Dock (it draws Mission Control)
Mission Control, Spaces and the ⌘-Tab switcher all live inside the Dock process. If Mission Control is hung rather than slow, open Terminal and run:
killall Dock
The Dock relaunches in a second with your settings intact. It won't cure the one-second freeze, but it clears a stuck overview or a switcher that stopped appearing.
2. Fix a black screen left behind on a second monitor
The workaround reported by several users: on the display that's gone black, add a new desktop (open Mission Control and click + at the top right), switch to it, then delete it again. That forces macOS to rebuild the Spaces on that screen.
3. Update mouse and gesture utilities
This one is precise. macOS 27 no longer reads the undocumented event fields that tools like Mac Mouse Fix used to fake trackpad gestures, so "click and drag to switch Spaces" or "button 4 opens Mission Control" simply stopped working. Mac Mouse Fix's developers have the fix on their main branch and a temporary macOS 27 build is linked from their GitHub issue tracker; other mouse and gesture utilities may have the same problem. If Mission Control works from the trackpad and the keyboard but not from your mouse, it's the tool, not macOS.
4. Re-check the shortcuts
Go to System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Mission Control and make sure the ones you use are ticked: ⌃↑ for Mission Control, ⌃↓ for application windows, ⌃← / ⌃→ between Spaces, and the Switch to Desktop N entries if you use ⌃1, ⌃2 and so on (those are off by default and only appear once the desktops exist). If a ticked shortcut still does nothing, another app has probably claimed it — our guide to shortcut conflicts shows how to find which one.
5. Turn off the settings that shuffle Spaces
Under System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Mission Control, two settings make a flaky Spaces setup feel worse than it is: Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use (desktops swap places behind your back) and When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application (⌘-Tab suddenly throws you to another desktop). Turning both off makes Spaces predictable while Apple works on the rest. The third, Displays have separate Spaces, changes how every monitor behaves and needs a log-out to apply — read what it does before flipping it.
6. Last resort: reset Spaces
If desktops and app assignments are genuinely corrupted, you can reset Spaces entirely:
defaults delete com.apple.spaces
Then log out and back in. This wipes your desktop arrangement and every "Assign To" choice you've made, so only do it once the gentler steps have failed.
Stop relying on Mission Control to find windows
Here's the honest reframe. Most trips into Mission Control aren't about Spaces at all — you're looking for one window. A laggy overview is annoying when you visit it forty times a day, and far less so when you visit it twice.
- Minimized windows: hold ⌥ as you release ⌘-Tab on an app to bring its minimized window back, or see the full guide.
- Another window of the same app: ⌘` cycles them without any animation at all.
- A specific window among many: Let's Switch is a keyboard window switcher — hold Option-Tab and pick from live previews of your open windows, most recent first, across every monitor. It draws its own switcher rather than the Mission Control overview, and the switcher is free; Pro ($9.99 once, no subscription) adds an Option-Space search palette for when you'd rather type a window's name.
- Arranging instead of hunting: if you use Spaces mainly to keep apps apart, tiling a few windows side by side on one desktop means fewer Space switches in the first place — Let's Tile does that from a keyboard grid.
If windows are ending up on the wrong desktop after sleep rather than lagging, that's a different problem with its own fixes: Mac windows on the wrong Space after sleep.
Frequently asked questions
Does Reduce Motion fix the Mission Control lag in macOS 27? Not according to people who've tried it. Users in the Apple Community thread report the one-second freeze with Reduce Motion on or off.
Should I downgrade to macOS 26 Tahoe? Only if Mission Control is central to your day and the lag is severe. Downgrading means erasing and restoring from a pre-upgrade backup. For most people, the fixes above plus a point update are the cheaper path.
Did macOS 27.0.1 fix Mission Control? Apple didn't say what 27.0.1 fixes. Install it and test the Spaces transition yourself; if the freeze is still there, report it through Feedback Assistant so it's counted.
Why does it only happen on my external monitor? Mission Control has to composite every window on every display. More pixels and more windows make any slowdown more visible, which is why multi-monitor and high-resolution setups report the worst of it.
