Mac window tiling shortcuts not working? Every cause, and the fix
macOS has had built-in window tiling since Sequoia, and it comes with a full set of keyboard shortcuts. It also has an unusual talent for doing nothing at all when you press them. If your Mac window tiling shortcuts are not working, the cause is almost always one of five specific things — and macOS tells you which one exactly never. Here is how to identify yours in about a minute.
First, check the shortcut itself
Apple's tiling shortcuts are all built on the Fn (Globe) key plus Control. Not Control alone, not Command. If you have been pressing ⌃← expecting a half-screen snap, nothing is broken — that chord isn't the one.

There is no thirds shortcut, and "Left & Quarters" is one half plus two quarters, not three equal columns. That is the feature, not a bug in your setup.
If the shortcuts do nothing but Window → Move & Resize in the menu bar works, skip to cause 2. If that menu is greyed out too, skip to cause 3.
Cause 1: your keyboard has no Fn or Globe key
This is the one nobody leads with, and it's the most common cause on a desk with a docked MacBook or a Mac mini. Every native tiling shortcut requires Fn/Globe. Most third-party keyboards — especially PC layouts, and plenty of mechanical boards sold for Mac — simply don't have that key. There is no modifier you can substitute, and macOS offers no way to rebind the tiling shortcuts to a chord you can actually press.
Some keyboard vendors expose an Fn key through their own software (Logitech Options+, Keychron Launcher, VIA/QMK firmware). If yours does, map a key to Fn and the shortcuts come back. If it doesn't, native tiling is keyboard-inaccessible on that hardware, full stop — the menu and drag-to-edge still work, but the shortcuts never will.

Cause 2: an app grabbed the chord first
macOS does not reserve fn ⌃ arrow for itself. Whoever registers
the combination first wins, and it goes both ways:
- The app wins. VS Code, Obsidian and several Electron apps have
shipped builds that interpret
fn⌃←as a text-navigation or Home/End binding, swallowing it before the system sees it. Tiling works everywhere except in that one app. - The system wins. In Microsoft Excel,
fn⌃→should jump to the last cell in a row. Instead the window tiles right. Same conflict, opposite winner.
The tell is that tiling works in Finder and Safari but not in one specific app. The fix is in that app's own keyboard settings — rebind its conflicting command — because you can't rebind the macOS side.
Cause 3: Move & Resize is greyed out
If the Window → Move & Resize menu items are dimmed, tiling is disabled system-wide, and the usual reason is a Mission Control setting that has nothing obvious to do with tiling.
Go to System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Mission Control and turn on Displays have separate Spaces. Log out and back in — a full restart if it's still dim. This is the single most reported fix in Apple's own community threads, and it catches people who deliberately turned that setting off to stretch one window across two displays.
The trade is real: with separate Spaces on, a window can no longer straddle two monitors. If that's how you work, you're choosing between that and native tiling.
Cause 4: the window can't be tiled
Not every window is eligible, and the shortcuts fail silently rather than telling you:
- Full-screen windows. A window in its own full-screen Space ignores
tiling shortcuts entirely. Press
⌃⌘Fto leave first. - Fixed-size windows. Preference panes, some dialogs and older Adobe and Java windows declare themselves non-resizable. macOS respects that and does nothing.
- Split View. Already-tiled Split View pairs are a separate mode, not tiled windows.
Test on a Finder window. If Finder tiles and your app doesn't, the app is the variable.
Cause 5: the settings got turned off
System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Windows holds the tiling toggles: Drag windows to screen edges to tile, Drag windows to the menu bar to fill screen, Hold ⌥ key while dragging windows to tile, and Tiled windows have margins.
These govern the drag behaviour rather than the keyboard shortcuts, so they're the answer when snapping-by-drag stopped working, or when tiled windows suddenly have a gap around them (turn margins off). Worth a look after any macOS update — if drag-to-edge is off, the keyboard is your only route in.
Why custom tiling shortcuts usually fail
The obvious workaround — bind your own chord in System Settings →
Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → App Shortcuts — fails for most people
because App Shortcuts match menu items by exact title, and Left lives
inside a submenu. Typing Left matches nothing.
The menu title has to be the full path:
Window->Move & Resize->Left
Even then, reports are mixed: many key combinations are silently rejected, and macOS gives no feedback about which. It's worth ten minutes, not an afternoon.

When the fix is to stop pressing Fn-Control
Three of the five causes above exist because Apple built the feature on the most fragile key on the keyboard, then made the shortcuts unrebindable. If you tile windows a few times a week, work around it. If you do it fifty times a day, the workaround is the problem.

Frequently asked questions
Do native tiling shortcuts need Accessibility permission? No. Tiling is part of macOS, so it needs no permission at all. If you were sent to Privacy & Security, you were reading advice about third-party window managers — those do need it.
Which macOS versions have window tiling? Sequoia (15) and later, including Tahoe (26). On Sonoma and earlier there is no built-in tiling to fix — only Split View and third-party tools.
Can I change the tiling shortcuts? Not directly. The only supported route is adding an App Shortcut with the full menu path, and it's unreliable. Third-party tilers let you bind whatever you like.
Why do my tiled windows have a gap around them? Tiled windows have margins in System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Windows. Turn it off for edge-to-edge tiling.
